Excellent product August 25, 2008 Mr. David Bell 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have been using this product with a IPhone 3G in a Honda Civic in the Belfast area.
The unit looks smart, appears to be sturdy and the functionality is relatively easy to pick up. The auto scan is very quick, and the resulting radio reception is very good indeed. I did not have to tinker with this in any way as mentioned by a previous reviewer. However I have no way of telling if this is limited to the area in which I am using it.
When I first plugged it into my IPhone 3G, the IPhone told me that this device was not designed for the IPhone and asked me if I wanted to switch to aeroplane mode. I said No, and the device has worked perfectly ever since. I havent got promted with the message again.
My only minor complaint (as mentioned by previous reviewers) is that it seems to forget its frequency every time the car engine is switched off. This only takes about 10 seconds to rectify, but is annoying nonetheless.
A Sound Quality Winner August 19, 2008 Katrina-UK (Stockport, Cheshire, United Kingdom) What a great little device, it works perfectly in my Daewoo Matiz with my iPod Nano 3G. The sound quality is how I listen to it on my iPod. There is no reduction in sound quality and there is no interference. However as you know the iPod doesn't have the best sound quality anyway, but if you're quite happy with the iPod sound, this will suit you fine.
To change tracks you can use either the little iPod controls which are situated on the thing you plug in to your cigarette lighter, or you can just control it normally using your iPod. If your radio/cd player has RDS display (mine does), it shows which tracks are playing by displaying them on your radio/cdplayer. You can also control the level of sound just by using your radio/cd volume up and down levels. What is also a big bonus of the Autopilot like a lot of Griffin devices, its a dock, so it charges my Nano on my journey whilst I'm listening to my tunes, so when I reach my destination my Nano is fully charged. Fantastic!
I have a minor complaint. When I take it out of my car to take with me (obviously I wouldn't leave either the Autopilot or the Nano in, as it would be open to theives), it re-sets, so I have to press the automatic tune button each time. Because the best signal varies depending on where I am, it comes up with a different 'best radio signal' each time. Then I have to tune my radio to match the best signal. This has to be done each time I take it out of my car which is a bit annoying and time consuming.
Here at last, and a colossal disapppointment August 10, 2008 Seamaster (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As a generally satisfied Griffin customer for many years (I imported one of the very first iTrips for the first gen iPod), I have waited in eager anticipation for this product, having no other means of playing my iPhone in my car.
I am therefore hugely disappointed to have to tell other potential customers that the performance of this latest iTrip could charitably be described as rubbish. All the new features are quickly rendered useless when you realize its ability to convey the sound of your iPod to your stereo is woeful. My original iTrip was orders of magnitude better at broadcasting a good, clear signal free of static and interference. This latest incarnation of the product can't. I live in an area with plenty of free frequencies, so no blaming that old cop-out. It is the worst FM transmitter I have used, bar none. I had it repackaged and returned to Amazon within hours and am back to burning CDs in iTunes.
Sorry Griffin. Back to the drawing board. And sorry to everyone else who has waited nearly a year for this. You're going to have to keep waiting, I'm afraid.
Fantastic Product August 4, 2008 C. Harrison (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Just connected this to my car, works perfectly with the Iphone 3G despite someone at the apple store saying that it wouldnt charge it does. The signal is very clear to another transmitter I have had and it also has very easy to use buttons to change tracks etc without touching your phone via the remote on the charger.
Excellent!
iTrip Autopilot with Smartscan July 24, 2008 A. Yu (Birmingham, England) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Ever since February or March when Griffin first announced this version of the iTrip, I have waited with baited breath because it sounded like the ideal solution to iPhone and iPod touch users wishing to use such devices in their cars.
It performs several functions, all very well. It's a charger which is ideal for the iPhone 3G especially if you're running a bluetooth headset alongside it. It's an FM transmitter which is the only way forward if your car's stereo is hard to change to one with a line-out connection. Last but not least, it's also a remote control which allows iPhone and iPod touch users to control their music without having to use a touch interface, which could prove hazardous whilst driving.
The charger is fantastic and provides several coloured rings of light indicating charge status so the device really doesn't need to have it's screen on at all.
The FM transmitter features the company's Smartscan solution which scans the local airwaves for 3 frequencies which are clean and free and will automatically assign it to 3 presets. You can also manually tune on the go and then assign these to any of the three presets. This works well in practice and the first preset it scanned for me is the one I now use permanently. There is one niggle with the hardware in that it does not remember the last frequency you tuned to, automatically or manually. It will be saved in presets and you will have to enable the preset every time the iTrip loses power or is unplugged. If it remembered the last station, it would be absolutely perfect! It also features stereo and mono modes, both of which produce different quality of transmission.
The Autopilot feature is a godsend for me. With traditional iPods, you could simply switch tracks using the familiar click wheel but with touch screen interfaces, this is less than ideal. The buttons themselves are tactile and produce a nice click, though the plastic does feel a little flimsy. It is ideal for playlists and albums where you have a favourite track or simply to replay a track that you'd like to hear again. Pausing is also possible and ideal for those moments where passengers are yelling at you to slow down or when a call comes through.
As a fellow reviewer mentioned, it is surprising to find a product that does exactly what it promises and does it well. Also, as a fellow reviewer commented on, the charging stalk is a little bulkier than normal so approach with caution. It isn't much wider than your normal charger for say, a TomTom but it's still significant enough that it may not fit into some more compact lighter sockets. Definitely worth the price and also 50% cheaper on Amazon than what the Apple store or Apple online charge!
