5 out of 5 stars Griffin Elevator vs BookArc   September 3, 2010
S. Malpas (Cardiff, UK)
For the majority of the time I use my 15" MacBook Pro in clamshell mode - closed, but connected to an external monitor and with separate keyboard/mouse (in other words, pretty much like a desktop). I wanted a stand for two main reasons: to help keep my laptop cool, and to save desk space. After some research I narrowed it down to two stands: this one, which lets you lay the laptop elevated at a near-horizontal angle - or the BookArc, where you place the closed MacBook upright into a slot. Well the BookArc looks sexier than the Griffin, and being vertical it would have saved even more desk space. There was just one problem with it, something that pushed me towards the Griffin...

If, like me, you leave your MacBook plugged in most of the time, you're advised to unplug it from the mains every 2 or 3 days and run the battery down to about 50%, then plug it back in (this keeps the electrons flowing). The thing is, clamshell mode only works while the laptop is plugged into the mains. With the BookArc, this means I'd have been lifting my MBP out of the stand and onto the desk every 2 or 3 days in order to open it and continue using it. For me that would have cancelled out the space-saving convenience, and frankly, been a bit of a pain.

The good thing about the Griffin is that you can keep your laptop on the stand and just lift up the screen if/when you need to run off battery. No need to physically take it off the stand, and no need to set aside additional desk space for this. There's also the added benefit of being able to use the laptop screen as a second display should you ever want to - and at a less neck-crunchingly bad angle. Even if you don't think you'll need it, it's nice to at least have that option - something you don't have with the BookArc.

The stand is super-easy to set up (takes seconds) and if you ever need to disassemble it, it doesn't use up too much space packed away. The rubber pads alone provide surprisingly ample grip to secure the laptop, and depending on how you handle it, you may find that the optional plastic stop-ends aren't needed. You also get to reclaim some desk space beneath the stand where you can store whatever you like - papers, a graphics tablet, a keyboard and mouse, etc, though I wouldn't personally store anything hot under there like an external drive. If you happen to work in a very hot environment, you could even place a small fan under there.

There are more expensive stands on the market, but quite honestly this one does everything I need it to - I've got storage space under the laptop, it looks stylish (moreso 'in the flesh') - and crucially, my MBP has been running cooler and quieter since being placed on it. A good purchase, and definitely recommended.

What the image above doesn't show is that the stand comes with 2 clips that go at the end of the two stick that support your laptop from slipping. Compared to the expensive stuff like the rain design, this stand looks awesome with a mac, and it keep it from heating underneath. If you want a stand buy it, don't think twice.

Not only does this product turn my Mabook screen into a far more ergonomically friendly second display when connected to my second monitor and external keyboard but it also frees a large amount of space on my desk. I know frequently store my Apple keyboard under the laptop when I am working at the desk but not using the computer. Added to this of course there is the benefit of the Macbook running far quieter and cooler as well.

In short: got an external keyboard and mouse? Get one of these!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Laptop stand   April 19, 2010

I bought this Griffin laptop stand for my 15" MacBook pro and it fits the bill perfectly. Very easy to put together and sturdy when constructed, and the rubber pads provide more than enough grip to secure my laptop without using the optional stoppers.

Another plus for this stand is that its clean lines and well designed structure means that there is a good amount of space below the laptop for a midi keyboard to be placed - taking away any clutter from your desk. It also increases ventilation around the computer meaning it will not overheat while placed on the stand.

Great product - highly recommended.
