5 out of 5 stars Fantastic iMic   February 5, 2010
lynnewivanee (UK & Spain)
I bought this iMic so that I could use my headset on my mac, I didn't realise that I could also use it to transfer my tapes, videos and old LPs via players and decks, that's brilliant. Haven't actually tried that bit yet but I know others who have and they said its good. I really recommend this little gadget.Griffin iMic 1102-IMIC2 - USB Audio Interface for Mac and PC

3 out of 5 stars Dodgy mic in port puts me off   October 11, 2009

The product mostly works well, but not impressed by build quality. Need to fiddle with the 'mic in' jack to get stereo as it doesn't give just by slotting it in. Not why I bought it and easily worked round, so for me not worth the hassle of returning it. Otherwise it and the enclosed software are fine.

4 out of 5 stars Griffin iMic Can Give Fantastic Results When Copying Your LPs Onto CD   August 10, 2009

I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for an inexpensive method of converting their treasured vinyl into a digital format for future safe-keeping (or for whatever reason), particularly if you need software which is Mac compatible (Macs will generally only deal with Aiff files, not Wav) and this Griffin device comes with "Final Vinyl" software for the Mac.

There are two caveats to my recommendation (hence the four stars); most importantly, if you are used to good reproduction of your records through your Hi-Fi system then you will be sorely disappointed with the results you get if you wire your turntable directly into the iMic using its in-built pre-amplifier (thin sounding, over bright, all bass sucked out of it and an over emphasisis on noise, presumably due to poor earthing). So why bother? Just keep your deck connected to your amp as usual and make a connection from the output sockets of the amp (just as you would to a conventional tape deck) into the line input sockets of the iMic and let your own (almost certainly) vastly superior pre-amp do all the work! The other slight issue I have is that the instructions, whilst on the whole admirably clear - and they need to be for a technical dummy like me - about setting everything up and getting going, they are not particularly detailed about how you can edit the files you save and accurately locate individual tracks. It takes time to adjust to the various procedures you need to go through to get a really good copy of your original disc with all the tracks in the right place.

If you are copying the files you have saved to your hard disc onto a CD, I would suggest that you have carefully named all the tracks you want to write so that they appear in the right order and use a good CD burning interface like "Toast" so that you can control the pauses between tracks - you will most likely want to set a pause of 0 seconds so as to replicate the original otherwise you will get annoying silent gaps of two or three seconds. Likewise, if you want larger gaps, you can set those as well.

Overall, this product has the potential if used with care to give virtually flawless copies of analogue originals and I have been amazed at how good the results can be. If it weren't for the foregoing I would give the iMic 5 stars. I have done "blind" listenings with a number of friends and they can't tell the difference between the vinyl LP and the CD copy of it as I toggle between the two. (Incidentally, its also important to set the recording level to a sensible level in the sound input preferences of your computer.) This rather blows out of the water my theory that analogue sound is inherently better than digital but rather suggests to me that so many commercially available CDs are just badly mastered (ie too loud and therefore over compressed - there is no doubt a commercial/customer pressure to do this). So, yes, if you want to copy your records then buy this iMic!

5 out of 5 stars Recording Winner   July 21, 2009

A simple device that works very effectively. I used it to input from a 6 channel mixer onto my laptop to record my band using Audacity. It worked very well and would recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Not a wise purchase   July 9, 2009

Poor quality instructions coupled with a vastly overcomplicated piece of software aimed at wannabe recording producers made this a very unwise purchase . I still haven't got it to work after half a dozen frustrating attempts and my LP collection still remains untranscribed. I thought that it might be too much to ask that any gadget that was so cheap could do the job - and I was right .
Defininitely NOT recommended
