5 out of 5 stars Small size, big punch!   June 30, 2009
Hector (Bham, UK)
I have used the imic for transferring vinyl records into the computer, to record with a mic like the Sony ECMMS907 into my ibook or macbook (this device is a lot better than the "pre-amp" included with the macbook), to transfer recorded media from a Sony Mini Disc to the computer, etc, etc, etc. You just need to use your imagination and the imic will give you great sound from a 2.5" diameter device, what else you want? The drivers are all in the Griffin website and the free Final Vinyl software is a nice addition. The sound quality is very clean and there is no crackling sounds or such.. If you want portable and versatile, you can't go wrong...

4 out of 5 stars Good supplier good(ish) kit   November 22, 2008

The supplier was faultless in supplying the kit which arrived ahead of time.

I needed something to transfer vinyl to an ipod. I'd experimented with cables directly to my laptop's mic socket from an amp but found the sound quality dire and in mono. After shopping around on the web I went for the imic as it was about a half to a third of the price of most alternatives, despite reading the occassional negative review.

It's being used with a laptop running XP and takes input direct from a turntable.

Getting it set-up and running was OK, though the documentation which arrived with the hardware and software couldn't be described as exhaustive or easy to use. Whilst most users will get it up and running in an hour or so, I'd say you have to be reasonably competant at using and installing software. It's not something someone with little or no confidence with IT would necessarily find easy. For anyone familiar with the old Haynes car manuals it's a '3 spanner' job.

Audacity itself seems to have a couple of quirks and it took me a couple of goes to get results I was happy with. For example, conversion of audacity files to MP3 requires download of a plug-in from a 3rd party website which it took me 1/2 hour to find and install.

The cables could do with being a bit longer, I'm lucky in having a table near the HiFi where I can leave everything running, otherwise I'd need to shift the turntable everytime I need to use it.

Sound quality is generally good, definitely acceptable for amatuer use. However, on loud tracks with quieter passages, the lower volume material can sound like it's coming from the bottom of a bucket. I'm still not sure (after a couple of weeks) if this is a problem with the hardware or my use of the software.

In summary, vastly better than just running a lead to a mic in socket and a good budget alternative to most of the alternatives and I don't regret buying it. Just don't expect earth shattering sound quality and not one for the total IT novice.

1 out of 5 stars Not quite what it seems - for some of us!   January 9, 2008

Plugged the iMic in between my turntable and XP computer via a spare USB port and set the iMic switch to "Mic" to engage the units built-in pre-amp. With my own audio recording program (Roxio Sound Editor)it proved impossible to adjust recording volume down enough to avoid distortion. This also proved the case using the recommended Audacity recording software. The only item in the iMic package that proved worth having was the RCA to mini-jack connecting cable - now used between the turntable and the "Line-in" socket of my computer's sound card where recording levels are just fine.
Concerning delivery it appeared that the Marketplace supplier easylaptopshop went on un-announced holiday for the Xmas to New Year period causing an unwelcome delay in getting the unit to me by post.

5 out of 5 stars Good kit - good supplier   January 8, 2008

I bought this as the laptop I use only has a mono mic. input.

It performed "straight out of the box" with my Linux installation - no fiddling with drivers or re-booting - "it just works!"

The supplier, Discount Discs, also gave excellent service - the iMic arrived on the day BEFORE the due dispatch date. Confirmation and information e-mails were helpful. It's a real shame that other companies [a certain broadband supplier for example] don't provide such efficient, friendly and cost effective service!

I'm using the iMic with a line into the microphone port an controlling the volume from my stereo - with minimal clean up necessary for tapes and a little more for vinyl, I'm getting to hear some of my old collection more conveniently on my MP3 player -- nostalgia without the hassle - brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars Exellent item - provides full stereo input in Linux   December 8, 2007

I bought this item to make recordings with my Sony ECM-DS70P stereo microphone in Linux.

It's very light, very compact and is recognized automatically by the latest version of ALSA (1.015) running on PClinuxOS. Gives excellent stereo input into kwave (my recording software of choice) even at half volume on the input level.

Very impressed,

Sasha
